It’s Not You, It’s Your Books

Did you see this article in the March 30 edition of The New York Times? (I’ve linked to it at the Classical Pursuits site to avoid any log in nonsense required at the Times site.)

The article explores whether our romantic interests are influenced by what our potential partners read. I love this quote by Laura Miller, a book critic for Salon:

I did have to break up with one guy because he was very keen on Ayn Rand. He was sweet and incredibly decent despite all the grandiosely heartless ‘philosophy’ he espoused, but it wasn’t even the ideology that did it. I just thought Rand was a hilariously bad writer, and past a certain point I couldn’t hide my amusement.

Amen, sister!

  1. Hear hear! If you must have an Ayn Rand phase, please be over it by age 21. After that, you are undoubtedly old enough to know better.

  2. Whew! Now I feel smart for being irritated by Ayn Rand.
